How long does Macrogol need to be taken for constipation?1
Treatment for constipation usually lasts for about 2 weeks. If your constipation is caused by an illness (like Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis) or by medicines that cause constipation, your doctor may recommend you take it for longer. For long-term treatment, the dose can often be lowered to 1 or 2 sachets a day.
How should I store the sachets containing Macrogol and the mixed solution?1
Sachets: Keep them out of sight and reach for children. Do not store the sachets above 30°C. Do not use the medicine after the expiry date.
Mixed Solution: Once you have made up the solution in water, if you cannot drink it straight away, keep it covered and in the fridge (2-8°C). You must throw away any solution not used within a 6-hour period.
Are there reasons I should not take products containing Macrogol and electrolytes?1
Yes. Do not take it if you have:
- An allergy to the active substances (macrogol 3350, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride) or any other ingredients.
- A blockage in your intestine (gut obstruction, ileus).
- A perforated gut wall.
- Severe inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or toxic megacolon.
What is Macrogol used for?1
This is considered a laxative used to treat constipation in adults, adolescents, and the elderly. It helps you have comfortable bowel movements, even if you have been constipated for a long time. It also works for severe constipation, known as fecal impaction. It is not recommended for children below 12 years of age.

Movicol® contains 186.87 mg (8.125 mmol) sodium per dose, equivalent to 9.3% of the WHO recommended maximum daily intake for sodium. When used long term for constipation, the maximum daily dose of this product is equivalent to 28% of the WHO recommended maximum daily intake for sodium. Movicol® is considered high in sodium. This should be particularly taken into account for those on a low salt diet.2
